I've been wanting to make some chalkboards (like everyone else in blogland) and was able to find two picture frames from the Goodwill. Both frames had such beautiful patinas that I didn't even need to paint them.
Just look at the detail on this one!
This was such an easy project! All I needed was some 220 grit sandpaper, Krylon Chalkboard Spraypaint in black and picture frames. (Oh, and some chalk too.) I removed the glass from the frames and rubbed the sandpaper on the glass so the spray would have something to adhere to. The sandpaper had such a fine grit that it was difficult to see most of the scratches. I then wiped off the glass with a soft dry cloth and then sprayed two light coats of the chalkboard spray. I waited about 30 mins in between each coat. I then waited 24 hours (per the directions on the spray can) so the paint could fully cure. After it was dry, I used the wide side of a piece of white chalk and covered the whole surface of the chalkboard and then erased it. That's it! Super simple.
This 8x10 frame I use in my kitchen for a menu board. I usually write the main course for dinner the night before. After the kids have gone to bed. Then it's a little surprise for them in the morning as they find out what we'll be having for dinner that night. They don't usually complain much if it's something they don't care for because if it's written down on the board then it's law! JK Actually, when I would just tell the kids (each one of them 5 times a piece) what was going to be for dinner, someone would complain trying to change my mind. With the wonderful menu board, I've only had someone change it once--I mean twice. Who am I kidding? I just like writing on the menu board. It's fancy and it looks good in my kitchen!
This frame is 5x7 and a good size to write a name or a word or two. (Or if I want to take a menu board with me on vacation--this one is the travel size!)
This was a super quick project. It only took me a few minutes. All the rest of the time was waiting for the paint to dry.
Next I'll try making a chalkboard out of a mirror.
